A Day Hike to Agios Giorgis

The day is August 10th. The cousins have all decided that we would hike to the other side of the island from our location of Faros. We gathered early that morning and began our one hour hike through billygoat trails that had us stepping gently as we were positioned on cliff edges for most of the journey. I have never seen a place more beautiful in my life. We went to the little church on the cliff and I said a prayer. We had a moment of thought to come back and whitewash the church because it had not been cared for in a long time. From this vantage point is where the beauty of Agios Giorgis reveals itself. When you look down into the cove all you see is beautiful white sand. We had a blast playing in the water. We ate our packed lunches on the beach and swam some more before our hike back to Faros around 5pm. It was a long day in the hot sun so my cousin and I decided we needed to boil some water to wash out our hair. That’s correct, no hot water during this time in that house or many of the homes on the island for that matter. We also decided that we should probably tackle shaving our legs! Haha! Once we washed up a nap was in order before night #2 back at the Taverna. It was another solid night of laughter and wonderful company. We closed the Taverna that night, well actually we were kicked out. What to do next? It was only 2am! You have to remember the rule when there. Just come home before the sun rises. Fishing sounded like the perfect idea and all we had were a few forks we “borrowed” from the Taverna. There were six of us wading in the water from 2-4am trying to catch anything with the fishing equipment at hand. Don’t worry, my cousin Billy managed to catch a shrimp, which he ate right there on the spot. In retrospect, I am not really sure I slept for the entire month of August because as I read this journal it appears there was no reason to do that. I have 21 more days to go.
